UK government lifts travel ban, removes Nigeria from red list
After the travel ban placed on Nigeria following the outbreak of Omicron variant, the government of UK said it will remove Nigeria and other African countries from the red list.
The 11 African countries involved are Nigeria; Angola; Botswana; Eswatini; Lesotho; Malawi; Mozambique; Namibia; South Africa; Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The Health Secretary, Sajid Javid said that the decision by the government of UK to delist Nigeria and other African countries from the red list becomes necessary because there is community transmission going on already.
Javid said that the travel red list is becoming less effective in curtailing spread of Omicron abroad since there is community transmission.
The Health Secretary informed ; “there is community transmission of Omicron in the UK and it has spread widely across the world. So, the travel red list is now less effective.
“We will maintain our temporary testing measures for international travelers, while we remove the 11 countries from travel red list”.
Going further, Javid stressed that all UK arrivals from the red list countries must ensure self-isolation in a pre+booked hotel approved by UK government for at least 10 days and pay for the services.
These require taking Covid tests within 48 hours of setting off for the UK and PCR tests within two days of arrival in the country.
