International Women’s Day: The glitz, excitement, as COWA’s Chairperson celebrates women

The International Women’s Day celebration at TinCan Island Port Command, has come and gone, but the glitz, excitement and good memories that characterised the entire programme will linger for long on the minds of women from different groups in the maritime industry.

The International Women’s Day with the theme; ‘Invest in women, accelerate progress was well celebrated at TinCan Command, as the Chairperson, Customs Officers Wives Association (COWA), TinCan chapter, Mrs Chinelo Dera Nnadi, honoured women from Customs, ANLCA, NAGAFF, APFFLON, DSS, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, NDLEA, COWA, media and women from other security agencies in the maritime industry

It was indeed a special occasion, as the conference hall of TinCan Command was filled to capacity with women who graced the occasion.

Addressing women who turned out in their beautiful attires, some in uniforms, Mrs Nnadi acknowledged the important role women play in economic transformation. She showered encomiums on women, describing them as special people in the world.

Her words : “As we are here to celebrate, we honour the remarkable achievements, resilience and contributions of women around the world. This day serves as a powerful reminder that gender equality is not just women’s issue but human rights issue.

“In every corner of the global, women have shattered barriers, pioneered change and shaped history. As we commemorate their triumph, let us also reflect on the work that remains. We must continue striving for a world where every woman can thrive free from discrimination, violence and inequality.

“International Women’s Day is an opportunity for us to recognise the importance of diversity and inclusion. Empowering women is not just about gender parity, it is about creating a society where everyone can reach her full potential regardless of gender.

“Let us commit to fostering environments that uplift and amplify the voices of women, ensuring they have equal opportunities in every aspect of life. This important day also serves as a reminder of the contributions of women and their importance in making a difference in the world.

“This day is an opportunity to reflect on the professionals made by women in all spheres of life, including business, politics and culture.

“It is also a time to raise awareness about challenges and inequalities women still face and make efforts to address them.

“I wish to thank our Resource Person, DCG Kaycee Ekekezie, retired, the National President of COWA, Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi and all women, especially those in Nigeria Customs Service and the maritime industry for being part of today’s great event.”

Speaking further, Madam Nnadi described Mrs Ekekezie as a woman with the purest of heart, an exemplary administrator, who believes in due process and doing things the right way.

The Public Relations Officer, PRO, of TinCan Command, Madam Ngozi, extolled the good qualities of retired DCG Kaycee Ekekezie. She described her as a true friend, teacher, sister, mother, a virtuous woman who inspired numerous officers who worked under her supervision while in Service.

The PRO said; “The retired DCG is an embodiment of true womanhood and a mentor. Customs recorded its first N1trillion revenue when Mrs Ekekezie was acting ACG of Trade and Tariff (T&T) department.”

In her presentation, Mrs Ekekezie, emphasised the importance of women in the society, especially in public Service.

According to her, women have been endowed with special qualities like honesty, integrity, patience, tolerance and perseverance; they should allow these qualities manifest in their homes and offices.

The programme took an interesting dimension during the question and answer segment, as participants were given the opportunity to interact freely.

Also, our Correspondent observed the enthusiasm expressed by female officers on the bold step taken by Mrs Nnadi to celebrate and honour women on that special occasion.

Indeed, Chinelo Nnadi is a virtuous woman, a pleasant person to be with.
She is beautiful and Soft-spoken. Her carriage is appealing and her sedate dignifying.
