The Comptroller General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, is certainly in the eye of the world,
His sterling qualities and leadership prowess have given him recognition within and outside the shores of Nigeria just few months in office.

The uncommon transformation and fresh impetus he brings to bear in taking the Service to greater heights have endeared him to all and sundry in the society.

The just concluded Comptroller General of Customs Conference, with the theme, ‘leveraging data analytics for secure and efficient trade facilitation in Customs operations’,
held at the prestigious Lagos Continental Hotel, has further revealed his managerial competence, giving credence to his policy thrust anchored on consolidation, collaboration and innovation.

The well publicised conference organised in grand style by CGC Adeniyi and his team, began on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, with a retrospective look at Customs, reflections from the past, as discussants included retired ACGs, who are highly skilled in Customs procedures. Other participants were economic experts with expertise in data analytics and management.

The high point of the conference was the opening ceremony held on Thursday, December 14, 2023, where, members of National Assembly, top government functionaries, captains of Industries, leaders of respected traditional Institutions, retired and serving Customs officers from different formations and the media graced the occasion.

The Grand African Ballroom, Lagos Continental Hotel was filled to capacity with important personalities. Members of Customs Officers Wives Association (COWA), led by their amiable President, Mrs Adeniyi, added colour to the conference, as they turned out in beautiful attires well suited for the event.

Everything about that conference came with so much prestige. Even the movement of CG Adeniyi himself, with his tall height and well arranged uniform was really charismatic, as he stepped into the hall, walking side-by-side with the Special Guest of Honour.

Members of the band stationed at the front side of the hall performed excellently, giving appealing rendition, which made the atmosphere quite exciting for the occasion.

The epoch making event was declared open by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Vice President Shettima, openly described CGC Adeniyi as a symbol of excellent leadership and the right person who deserves to sit atop the leadership position of Nigeria Customs Service.

The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu,
extolled the virtues of CGC Adeniyi, calling him a dynamic, visionary and result-oriented leader.

Sanwo-Olu, who couldn’t hold back his admiration for CGC Adeniyi, said; “I am really proud of you. You brought transformational leadership to Customs. Your integrity moved Mr President to appoint you as the Comptroller General of Customs. We are excited about what you are doing in Customs.

“We must build a strong working relationship with you and create enabling environment for Customs to grow more and more in Lagos. We are working to build infrastructure for the Service to thrive.

” Data Analytics is important in moden day Customs operations for technology to become strong enabler in reaching a position that is second to non anywhere in the world.

“We can’t continue to rely on crude oil for economic sustainability. NCS under your watch is bringing value for the industry in collecting revenue for government. With Customs, we can get more revenue to run the economy.

“I am truly proud of what you are becoming and what you are planning to turn the Nigeria Customs Service into. Lagos is open to you and will continue to remain your host. The 70 percent revenue you are collecting will increase.”

He went on :  “When you do more, it means Lagos is also doing more. When you realise more, Lagos will realise more and by extension, the whole country will do more; and the economy will benefit from it.

“You are proactive in leading the Service, the leadership is well motivated. We will criticise you when need be, support you when there is need, because we wish you well in Lagos.”

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, described CGC Adeniyi as well refined, intelligent leader.

His words :  “CGC’s conference is a good initiative and important to Nigeria. Your transformation agenda and innovative ideas in moving Nigeria Customs forward are well appreciated.

“Data is vital in modern society for trade facilitation. Customs plays a pivotal role in economic growth and sustainability. Keep your transformation agenda right and support Mr. President to succeed.
