Nigerian ports to get electronic cargo tracking notes nationwide – FG

…targets consortium of 5 Belgian firms for implementation

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given approval for installation of Electronic Cargo Tracking Notes for Nigerian ports across the nation.

The Minister of transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, made this known yesterday, in a chat with Journalists, after the FEC meeting that was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

The Transport Minister revealed that the project will be implemented by a consortium of five Belgian firms in synergy with four indigenous logistics companies. He added that the project will be carried out under a concession agreement of 15 years.

According to him, E-Cargo Tracking Notes will pave the way for government to generate from $90 million to about $235miion revenue annually and block revenue leakages in the port system.

The Minister informed that the revenue will be shared 60-40 percent, as 60 percent will go to the government .

He emphasised that the project implementation will address issues of false declaration of cargoes, wrong classification and even concealment causing revenue leakages and insecurity in the system.

He pointed out:  “The deployment as well as implementation of this project will boost revenue collection for government in terms of duties and port charges”.

He went on; “The project will generate revenue to Nigerian government from $90 million to a peak of about $235 million annually”.
