The out-going National President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has said that the lingering scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol must receive urgent intervention of the Federal Government, in order to address the issue and put the nation’s economy on the right trajectory.
He also said that the scarcity of Naira notes in the system must be addressed immediately, so as not to hinder smooth conduct of the 2023 general elections.
He made these assertions at the on-going 13th quadrennial national delegates conference of NLC in Abuja.
His words : Nigeria is the only oil producing nation and a member of OPEC that still imports petroleum products, despite the fact that the country is highly blessed with natural resources.
“The policy of continuous importation of petroleum products is faulty and must be jettisoned.
“If we refine petroleum products at home, the issue of subsidy will be a thing of the past. We insist that our refineries must work. We will not discuss the issue of change in prices because we want our refineries to work.
“Today, the power sector is not functioning optimally despite privatisation. So, privatisation has failed.
“Many government enterprises had been privatised yet, many of these enterprises are not working.
Privatisation of public firms is a way of putting our commonwealth in the hands of few individuals to the detriment of the masses.”
On the shortage of Naira notes in the country forcing people to protest naked in some banks, he said : “If the currency crisis is not addressed quickly, we don’t know what next will happen.
“Nigeria is preparing for 2023 general elections and we cannot carry out elections smoothly with these crises in the country.
“We have more than enough to address these two major issues. So, we want these problems to be addressed by government as a matter of urgency.
“The situation is so sad that we see people going naked in banks to express their displeasure with the current financial crisis in the country. So, something must be done immediately”.
