Fuel scarcity in Abuja may worsen if …

If the Federal Government does not put measures in place urgently to address the scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, the situation may worsen, as racketeers are already taking advantage of the lingering scarcity to do business.

Our correspondent while on official assignment in Abuja observed that some racketeers were already hawking the product with jerrycans along major roads.

Many of those hawking petrol were seen mostly along the Airport road and other areas within Abuja town.

Also, it was noted that the cost of transportation has increased by over 30 percent on movement within Abuja town.

More so, long queues of vehicles were seen at various retail outlets waiting to buy fuel, even as some petrol stations were under lock and key, claiming that they had exhausted the product at their disposal.

Our news inquest revealed that a litre of petrol in Abuja currently sells for between N350 and N400 in black market rate, at places like Wuse, Asokoro and other areas within the FCT.

Two commercial drivers operating within the Airport in Abuja lamented the effect of the scarcity on the masses, sayng they bought a litre for about N400 from the black market after spending hours at a filling station.

Our correspondent also gathered that some managers of petrol stations in FCT are deliberately hoarding the product due to the scarcity. These managers sell petrol only at night when they can increase the price to make more profit.
