NIWA condoles with families of victims in Katsina State 

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), has sympathised with the families of 15 victims of boat mishap in Katisina.

This formed part of the press statement signed and made available by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, NIWA, Mr. Jubril Darda’u.

The statement reads : “The boat mishap, which occurred on May 4, 2022 at about 11.00pm in Mai-Adua Local Government Area of Katsina State, claimed 15 lives”.

NIWA while condoling with the family of the deceased, appealed to boat drivers and passengers to always obey the rules, as well as guidelines regulating passengers’ transportation, by adequately making use of life jackets and standard boats.

The Authority also warned against overloading the boats and sailing at night.

The statement :
“We are extending our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We are greatly pained that this mishap occurred despite all the measures the Authority has put in place to forestall such mishaps.
Just recently, NIWA distributed life jackets and some patrol vessels to al Area Offices across the country, in effort to enhance surveillance and monitoring of activities on the waterways.

“We are also appealing to drivers and passengers to obey the rules and guidelines regulating passengers’ transportation. The use of life jackets; no sailing at night; the use of standard boats and not overloading the boats are key guidelines for safe passengers’ transportation.

“As we condole with the government and people of Katsina State, in particular, families of the deceased, we shall not relent on our efforts to curb these occurrences within our inland waterways” .
