Nigerian Navy signs contract with Turkish firm for purchase of Offshore Patrol Vessels
In a bid to step up security surveillance in Nigerian maritime domain, the Federal Government has granted
approval for the Nigerian Navy to procure two new Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs).
This becomes imperative for the Navy
to increase the tempo of maritime interdiction operations, Naval fire support to land forces, as well as special forces operations, in order to stem the tide in criminal activities within Nigerian maritime environment.
To fast track the procurement process, the Nigerian Navy has signed contract with a Turkish company – Dearsan Shipyard Limited, for the two new Offshore Patrol Vessels to be made available within an agreed period of 37 months.
According to the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, in a statement by the Director of Information, Naval Headquarters, Abuja, Commodore Suleman Dahun, Dearsan Shipyard was selected following its track record and assurance that the Company has the expertise and technical-know-how to build a platform, which could be deployed as OPV within a given period of time.
“Also, with cost effective price, the Shipyard has the capacity to make the platform for warfare and maritime defence purposes, to protect the nation’s maritime domain”.
To him, the contract signing with Dearsan Shipyard is another remarkable feat by Nigerian Navy in its fleet renewal effort, which is geared towards actualising its Strategic Plan for 2021 to 2030.
He pointed out that the contractual agreement between the Navy and Dearsan Shipyard on OPVs will foster more cordial engagements for
Nigeria and Turkey in the long-run.
Highlighting the commitments by government under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari at ensuring maritime security, the
Chief of Naval Staff, thanked the President for his tremendous support for the Navy.
He commended the Nigerian Navy on its giant strides recorded in maritime security, which he said has drastically reduced nefarious activities of criminal elements in the marine environment.
He assured that the Offshore Patrol Vessels will carry out activities like search and rescue; anti-smuggling; anti-piracy; anti-drug trafficking and disaster relief operations.
In the same vein, the Chief Executive Officer of Dearsan Shipyard, Murat Gordi, expressed great pleasure to the Federal Government for the confidence reposed in their Company to build the Vessels.
