(Report by Udeme Clement):

The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Ogun Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS),
Comptroller P. C. KOLO, and his vigilant officers have unleashed what can be described as a total anti-smuggling onslaught on die-hard smugglers operating in Ogun State, especially at Idiroko axis, the border between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

This was evidence in massive seizures of prohibited items showcased by the CAC and his team at the Command, recorded in half year of 2021.

Comptroller KOLO, known as a no-nonsense officer, displayed mind boggling seizures of 34,540 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50kg each ( equivalent to 58 trailers). Other items
include
VEGETABLE OIL: 31 KEGS OF 25 LITRES EACH • SUGAR: 30 BAGS OF 50KG EACH • TOMATO PASTE: 51 CARTONS • CANNABIS SATIVA (BOOK SIZE): 1,514 WRAPS • USED TYRES: 44 PIECES • PMS: 2,224 KEGS OF 25 LITRES EACH • FROZEN POULTRY PRODUCTS: 1,110 CARTONS • SECOND HAND CLOTHES: 84 BALES • USED FOOTWEAR: 115 PAIRS • USED HAND BAGS: 12 SACKS • BODY CREAM: 127 PIECES • MEDICAMENT: 20 CARTONS.

Showing reporters the seized items at the Command, Comptroller KOLO disclosed; The cumulative Duty Paid Value (DPV), for all the seizures amounted to N834,765,273.00 (approximately N834.8million).”

He informed; “On REVENUE collection for the Federal Government,
the Command generated a total of N15,261,074.00 in the half year of 2021, mainly proceeds of auction sales of seized petroleum products (PMS) and scrap metals.

“It should be noted that the directive of Nigerian Government on border closure is still subsisting, hence, there is no revenue generated from import activities.
I wish to reiterate that our intelligence network in the Command is still very active, as we deploy intelligence in virtually all our operations, which has yielded greater successes and continuously being recorded on daily basis.

” Let me once again warn criminal elements in the State that in whichever methods they plan their smuggling strategies, we shall definitely uncover it, make arrest and inflict gross financial injury on such economic saboteurs.

“It is suffice to say that continuous attacks on Customs and other security operatives in the State by some criminal elements will not deter us from sustaining the onslaught on their smuggling activities. We are determined more than ever before to carry out this battle to its logical conclusion.

“May I thank and appreciate our critical stakeholders, members of the Press, other Security agencies and Traditional rulers for their continuous collaborative efforts and synergy with the Service while carrying out our statutory mandate in the State”.

On the whole, the impressive score card of Comptroller KOLO and his team shows a monumental achievements in anti-smuggling activities during the period under review, despite the volatile nature of their operating environment. A typical example is the
spectacular seizure of 34,540 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50kg each ( equivalent to 58 trailers), mentioned above.

Also, worthy of note is the ingenuity of the team in uncovering concealment of smuggled items, including rice concealed in kegs of vegetable oil, as shown on the pictures.

“The CAC, who frowned at nefarious activities of illicit traders said;
“You will all agree with me that if this quantity of rice is allowed into the Nigerian market, it will put Government Rice Policy in jeopardy.”
