Customs Strike Force saving Nigeria’s economy millions of Naira -Says DC Attah

* Lauds DC Shuaibu on outstanding performance

(By Udeme Clement):

The Customs National Public Relations Officer, DC Joseph Attah, has said that intervention by the Strike Force Unit of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in anti-smuggling drive is preventing the nation’s economy from losing millions of Naira.

He made this assertion in a chat with reporters during the press conference, organised by Customs Strike Force in Zone ‘A’, to showcase over N800million seizures made in just three weeks of operations.

DC Attah explained that if the Strike Force operatives had not intercepted the items, which were falsely declared by importers, the duty that should have been paid to the Federal Government, would have gone into private pockets.

He said, “You can see items worth millions of Naira that duty ought to have been paid to government falsely declared by the importers.

“The intention was to evade payment of import duty and government needs such revenue to build roads, schools and hospitals.

“Smuggling is not only about bringing in contraband into the country against government trade policy. It also includes false declaration of dutiable goods, because the intention is to evade payment of appropriate duty, thereby depriving government of revenue.”

He went on, “With this timely intervention and remarkable performance, those criticising the setting up of Customs Strike Force will appreciate what the Unit is doing to enhance economic growth and development.”

Responding to question on when government will re-open land borders, DC Attah didn’t give a straight forward answer.
Rather, he informed, “The land borders are still closed. Diplomatic engagement is at advance stage. Government is reviewing the process and will take appropriate decision at the right time”.

On the whole, the National PRO commended DC Shuaibu and his team for their hard work and resilience.
