Joint Border Drill Operations Sector- 3, covering the North Central Zone of Nigeria has seized 23,449 bags of foreign
rice during its anti-smuggling activities from July 26, 2020, till date.
The team also intercepted 1,212 bags of fertilizer worth over N16.9million in Duty Paid Value, DPV.
The Coordinator of the team, Acting Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Ag. ACG Mohammed Uba Garba, made this known while addressing the media in Ilorin, even as he decried high rate of youth involvement in illicit trade in the country.
He revealed that the team recorded 111 seizures within the period under review.
He also disclosed that the team through intelligence arrested 13 suspects and repatriated 15 Nationals of Benin Republic, who entered Nigeria through bush path from Kabour-Okuta-Taso road.
He frowned at the attitude of some youths involved in illegal activities within the border communities.
According to ACG Uba, some youths who are into smuggling do not see it as a crime, but as a normal business or way of life.
He stressed, “In fact, if you ask our youths today to mention the crimes bedeviling our society, you will only hear things like robbery, kidnapping, murder, fraud and Money laundering. You will hardly hear them mention smuggling as a crime, because to them, it is a normal business.”
ACG Uba advised Nigerian youths not to allow themselves be deceived by engaging in smuggling, because it is a serious crime that could lead to imprisonment, if anyone is found culpable.
“He advised, “Let the youths look at areas like agriculture, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), as well as skills relevant to economic growth and development. They will make legitimate earnings from these.”
Speaking further, the ACG warned host communities and local dwellers to stop seeing smuggling as a means of livelihood, also to stop conspiring with the perpetrators to sabotage government policies.
