By now illicit traders operating at the border between Nigeria and Benin Republic will be counting their losses, as operatives of Ogun 1 Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service, intercepted bullet proof car, 55 sacks of cannabis sativa, 149 bags of sugar, bundles of used tyres and 17 cartons of fresh herbal soap.
The Command also intercepted 697 bags of Sodium hydroxide chemical, 40 drums of ethanol, 11,841 bags of foreign rice, 130 units of vehicles and 3,204 cartons of poultry products.
Other items seized include nine cartons of Mosquito coil, 12 cartons of spaghetti, two cartons of milk, seven sacks of bitter kola, 26 sacks of kolanut, two cartons of blue-band, 1,950 litres of diesel, 3,250 litres of kerosene, 98,200 litres of Petrol, 11 bales of secondhand clothings, 306 kegs of palm oil, 98 kegs of vegetable oil and 39 units of motorcycles,
among other prohibited items worth over N500million.
Addressing Reporters at Idiroko, the Customs Area Controller, CAC, of the Command, Comptroller Agbara Michael, disclosed that the items were seized in the second quarter of 2020 fiscal year.
He informed, “The Command was able to achieve these feats due to strategic enforcement measures put in place, despite the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the economy.”
He pointed out, “As you all know, the border is still closed to import and export. This makes our traditional revenue generation not feasible.
“However, we are able to generate some fees from sales of petroleum products and other perishable items that cannot be warehoused.
“During the period under review, the Command made 439 seizures worth N500,766,215”.
He stressed, “The Command will continue to dialogue, engage and educate the Public on social/economic implications of smuggling to the nation.
“We wish to reiterate that continuous attack on operatives of Customs and other sister Agencies will not deter us from performing our legitimate duties”.
