The Oyo/Osun Command of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has refused to accept alleged spoilt rice returned to its Office in Ibadan by government of Oyo State.

The Command insisted that, there is no official letter or any directive from Customs Headquarters to receive rice released to the State, but returned after some days on allegation that it is not good for consumption.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer, PRO, of the Command, Mr Abdullahi-Lagos Abiola, explained that official letter was given to the Command by top Customs Management to release the rice, and must equally wait for directive on the next line of action.

The PRO emphasised that Oyo/Osun formation like any other Command is a unit of Nigeria Customs Service and cannot take any decision on it own without directive from top Customs Management.

His words, “For instance, before releasing the rice, we got an official letter from the top Customs Management directing the Command to give out the rice.

“Now, the Command is yet to get any directive or official letter from Customs headquarters to receive such rice. Therefore, we cannot receive the rice back into our warehouse.”

He asked, “How can we collect alleged spoilt rice without any letter from the headquarters to that effect ?

“So, We must wait for directive from the headquarters”.

On the rice being left outside Customs premises by Oyo State government officials, he said, “As you can see,
they left the trucks with the rice outside the gate at their own risk”.

He stressed, “We have no control over any item that is outside our office”.
