The President, Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria, MAJAN, Mr Ray Ugochukwu has
called on the Federal Government to build germs- killing gateway at the nation’s seaports to sanitise people going in and out of the ports environment.

This, he said is imperative to curb further spread of the deadly coronavirus in the country.

The MAJAN President explained that germs-killing gateway like what obtains in United Arab Emirates and other advanced nations will automatically sanitise port users, who are still carrying out transactions in the seaports despite the lock-down,

He said that the device will also be useful even for Customs Officers involved in Clearing goods in the ports.

He informed, “Germs-killing gateway is a device that is very useful in curbing spread of coronavirus and other infectious diseases”.

“This is because if we put it at the entrance of our Seaports, the device will automatically sanitise people going into the ports, as they pass through it”.

“Aside from seaports, “We can put such devices at the hospitals, bus stations and other places, not just in Lagos State but across the country'”.

Speaking further, Ugochukwu, who has wealth of experience in the maritime industry commended the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman, for touring all the terminals in Lagos, to get first hand information on challenges facing terminal operators during this lockdown.

According to him, the NPA Boss acted promptly by visiting the terminals personally to see things for herself.

He described Hadiza’s action as timely, very encouraging and the best approach to statutory functions, especially at a time the nation’s economy is experiencing some difficulties, following the coronavirus pandemic that is ravaging the whole world at the moment.

The MAJAN President called on other public Office holders to follow the good example of NPA Boss.

Recall that last week, the MAJAN President set up a Committee comprising of four members to monitor  compliance on Executive Order of the Federal Government for the lockdown in Lagos and other States.

The exercise, which he said was part of MAJAN’s contribution to support government at this critical time.
