Anti-smuggling: Army, Navy lauds Western Marine Customs

*As Comptroller Peters leads another 12 hours operations on waterways

The Commanding Officer of Nigerian Army, 15-Field Engineering Regiment, Badagry, Lt Col E. C. Lawani, has commended the new Customs Area Controller, CAC, Western Marine Command of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Comptroller Olugboyega Peters, describing him as competent, focused and diligent.
He gave this commendation when the CAC visited his division yesterday, during operations on the waterways.
He enthused, “We learnt you assumed office only two weeks ago and you are already on the water. It shows your level of commitment, hard work and competence. We are ready to work with you, to protect our economy”.
In the same vein, the Commanding Officer, Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base, Badagry, Captain T Senibo, expressed great pleasure on the visit of Comptroller Peters, and the impact he made in Western Marine Command just few days in office.
He asserted, “We are working for a common interest, which is our economy. We will galvanise together”.
From there, Comptroller Peters proceeded to the Palace of De Wheno Toyi-1, the AKRAN of Badagry, where he received royal blessing.
The CAC, who sought the cooperation of Oba Toyi and his people said, “visiting the Oba is a sign of respect for him”.
That was not all. The CAC moved from there to Badagry out-station and addressed his officers.
His words, “Be security conscious. Be your brothers keeper. Use more of intelligence.
We are on Operation Total Crush of any smuggling activity. With closure of borders, smugglers attention is on water. Be vigilant.”
Comptroller Peters moved from there to Yekeme out-station at Pashi community, within Badagry West, where the first Customs barracks in Lagos is located.
At Yekeme, he met the Baale of Pashi community and advised the youths who came out with the Baale to engage in legitimate businesses, in order to enhance creation of jobs.
The assignment was very tasking, the terrain fearful but Comptroller Peters moved on courageously with his team.
From Pashi, they moved to Gbaji and continued to Seme Area Command, where he had a brief meeting with the CAC, at the Joint Border Post.
In fact, at Seme, the border between Nigeria and Benin Republic, it was another new discovery.
Seme CAC took Peters round the border and showed him a beach behind his Command, where die-hard smugglers use for illicit trade.
The assignment, which began in the early hours of the day ended by 8.30pm, over 12 hours on water.
In the team were, the Staff officer; Mr Ajiya A.B. in charge of Idiroko Marine out-station; AC Ohanyere in charge of Badagry out-station; Mr Abona, the operations officer; the Public Relations Officer, PRO, Mr Tangwa and other Operatives of the Command.
According to the PRO, “Comptroller Peters is an Engineer, a Lawyer and competent officer. He has served Customs at various units including Federal Operations Zone ‘D’ in the North. He likes swmimming and reading.
Above all, he runs an open-door policy.
