The Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone ‘A’ of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, is in the news again for outstanding performance, as the Unit uncovered new antics of smuggling and concealing prohibited items in gas cylinders.
The Unit through intelligence intercepted vegetable oil, rice, poultry products conveyed in 12 different vehicles and some items concealed in gas cylinders, in attempt to escape security checks.
The Public Relations Officer, PRO, of the Unit, Mr Jerry Attah disclosed this to Journalists, showing pictures of the seized items.
That was not all. The Unit also intercepted 1,393 bags of foreign rice; 187 jerrycans/66 drums of vegetable oil; 625 Cartons of poultry products and 50 jerrycans of foreign vegetable oil from unapproved routes within Ogun State, from February 5 to 17, 2020, based on surveillance.
Mr Attah explained that the unrelenting efforts of the Customs Area Controller, CAC of FOU Zone ‘A’, Comptroller Usman Yahaya is yielding positive results in anti-smuggling operations. The cumulative Duty Paid Value, DPV, of the seized items is N40.1million.
His assertions, “In fact, this seizure is coming barely two weeks after the Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC Ali Hameed came to Lagos on a working visit, where he showcased seizures made by FOU ‘A’, with monetary value of over N10 billion.
“The desperate act by these dare-devil smugglers concealing edible items in gas cylinders further justifies the hard chase by operatives of Customs.
“The DPV break down of the seized items: Rice N27,860,000.00, Vegetable. Oil N6,284,250.00 and frozen Poultry N6,000,000.00”.
On his part, the CAC gave a strong warning, “Unless economic saboteurs repent from their unscrupulous activities, they will continue to count losses”.
He advised, “Legitimate traders should be compliant in their declarations. The Unit is ever ready to facilitate trade in line with International best practice”.
The CAC thanked CGC Hameed Ali and his entire Management Team for providing necessary logistics and motivation that led to this achievement.
He called on patriotic Nigerians to support the Service in its fight against smuggling by giving information that could assist the Unit in curbing the menace.
