By Udeme Clement and Agency News:
In line with the policies of the Federal Government to curtail influx of fake and substandard goods into the country, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, has destroyed substandard mobile phone accessories estimated at the monetary value of N480 million.
The Director of Inspectorate, Compliance and Directorate of SON, Mr Obiora Manafa, disclosed this at the destruction site in Epe, Lagos.
Manafa, who represented the Director General of SON, Osita Aboloma, stressed that SON is working tirelessly to ensure that substandard goods are not brought into the local markets, to the detriment of consumers.
He said, “We are here to destroy these substandard products because they are dangerous. We do not want them to enter the Nigerian markets”.
He added, “These are mobile phone accessories and are fake. The major brands, as you can see here are Samsung, Infinix, Techno, Huawei and many others.
“We seized them from a commercial warehouse in Lagos and we discovered that the products do not belong to the owner of the warehouse.
“We seized the mobile phone accessories for not meeting up with the required standards”.
According to him, “The seizure will serve as deterrent to unscrupulous importers engaging in illicit trade, to short-change unsuspecting consumers”.
