In line with the policy of the Federal Government on ‘Ease of doing business’, the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, is putting measures in place to ensure decongestion at the Lagos Port Complex.

The General Manager of Corporate and Strategic Communications, NPA, Adams Jatto, revealed this in a press statement signed and made available to reporters in Lagos.

He explained that decongestion becomes necessary to address recent increase in waiting time of vessels at the Lagos Port Complex Apapa.

According to him, the Authority officially had a meeting with terminal operators, as well as shipping firms in the Port and decided to decongest the port, in order to enhance trade facilitation.

Jatto informed, “The decision aims at immediately resolving the issue of congestion in Lagos Pilotage District.”

He went on, “From January 27, vessels waiting to berth at any terminal within Lagos Pilotage District will be diverted to other terminals with capacity to berth vessels within the district”.

He added, “In the event that all terminals in Lagos cannot discharge any vessel within four days, such vessels will be diverted to the Eastern Ports (other pilotage districts) for immediate berthing.”

He disclosed, “NPA will liaise with other relevant government agencies on behalf of stakeholders to fast track clearance of vessels and cargoes when necessary”.

He emphasised, “These steps are taken to promote ‘Ease of Doing Business’, to curtail negative economic impact of long turnaround time of vessels on stakeholders in the industry.”

His assertion, “NPA is seeking the support and cooperation of all stakeholders to achieve this”.
