Lekki Seaport breakwater at 50% completion – Says Heukelom
The Technical Director of Lekki Seaport, Steven Heukelom has said that the Breakwater is already at 50 per cent completion level at the moment.
Heukelom made this known at a media tour of the Port yesterday in Lagos.
He explained that the Breakwater, which is one of the largest parts of the port construction, is already at advanced stage, as one-kilometre work has been done, out of the full length of 1.9 metres.
According to him, “When work is completed, this seaport will have three containers berth of about 680 metres long and 16.5metres water depth, one liquid, as well as one dry bulk terminal.
“Also, this deep seaport will have the capacity to berth large containership of 18, 000 TEUs”.
He went on, “At the moment, we are almost halfway into the breakwater construction. 900 metres have been done, close to one kilometre and the full length will be 1.9 metres. We will dredge the channels going up and the channels will be around 11 kilometres long before we reach the natural depth of 16.5 metres” .
He added, “In phase-two, we will put the liquid jetties, while the basin in the channel will be deepened to 19.5 metres. So, the maximum size of container vessels we can receive will be up to 18, 000 TEUs.
“Having big vessels in the port will be a game-changer for the industry.”
The Lekki Port is located at Lagos Free Trade Zone.
