The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Federal Operations Unit, FOU Zone ‘C’ Owerri, has seized 1,182 cartons of Analgin injections concealed in a container and smuggled into the country.
The Unit also arrested six suspects in connection with the seized items.
The Customs Area Controller, CAC, of the Unit, Comptroller Olusemire Kayode, disclosed this to reporters during press briefing.
He revealed that this particular drug has been banned by NAFDAC since 2005 because of its severe adverse effects in the body.
He frowned, “What will make someone to bring in such dangerous drug that is detrimental to health?
“This is even worse than Tramadol, because with Tramadol, there is an approved dosage. But this Analgin has been banned globally due to the grave adverse effects on people.
“The container carrying the drugs was intercepted at Akpajo, along Port Harcourt, Owerri road, and the drugs were found concealed with durable items”.
Comptroller Kayode also showcased seizures of 1,920 bags of foreign rice, two 40ft containers loaded with 612 Chairs, one 40ft container with 521 bales of secondhand clothes, another truck with 61 bales of secondhand clothes, making a total of 582 bales and other items worth over N492million in Duty Paid Value, DPV.
The CAC said, “Some of the rice we seized had already expired.
“The fight against rice smuggling is not yet over. Daily, people struggle to bring in rice and we are ready to deter them.
“Some bags of the rice were concealed in a truck filled with granites, which is very dangerous to health”.
He stressed, “Some Nigerians are desperate and in the habit of breaking the law. This is not good for economic growth.
“The border drill exercise, the activities of Customs Strike Force and Federal operations units, as well as the Commands are curtailing smuggling in the country.
“Well-meaning Nigerians should give Customs useful information that will help in the war against illicit trade in all ramifications”
