.“On the night of November 10, 2019, following the discharge of cargo from a South African Airways flight 5A060 from Johannesburg, our officers at the Tarmac intercepted a consignment indicated as perishables.

“Our officers requested to sight the items before transferring them. The airway bill described the goods as fresh vegetables but the contents were later discovered to be 40 cartons of assorted frozen products, which include pork, beef and fish fillets”.

These were the words of the Customs Area Controller, CAC, Muritala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA,  Comptroller Wale Adeniyi, while giving explanation on how the Command seized frozen items falsely declared as fresh vegetables.

He went on, “It was quite obvious that the importers of the consignment through his agents prepared a pre-release documentation, purporting the imports to be fresh vegetables, with the intention to evade the import prohibition order.”

Comptroller Adeniyi, further revealed, “At about 0005 hours the following morning, another consignment of 104 cartons of pork meat, beef and turkey were seen abandoned inside 4 dollies close to Gate 13.

“The total Duty Paid Value, DPV, of the seized items is N68.9 million”.

The CAC attributed the mind boggling seizure to border closure, stressing that it was the first of its kind in the history of the Command.
