Rice smuggling: Customs in Taraba records over N10.2million seizures

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Adamawa/Taraba Command has recorded seizures with a Duty Paid Value, DPV, of over N10.2million.
The Command also arrested a syndicate specialised in smuggling foreign rice into the country and repackaging it in locally made bags, in a deliberate attempt to deceive local consumers.
The Customs Area Controller of the Command disclosed that his operatives through intelligence seized the rice already repackaged in beans bags and loaded in a truck to be distributed into the local markets.
He explained that each bag of beans contained about three bags of foreign rice smuggled into the country illegally.
According to him, the seized rice worth over N7.2million and beans over N3millon, making a total Duty Paid Value of over N10.2million.
He also said that three suspects were arrested in connection with the seized items and must be charged to court for prosecution, in order to serve as deterrent to others.
