The Western Marine Command of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, is currently on red alert, as the unit has stepped up patrol surveillance in its area of coverage, in order to curb illicit trade on waterways.
The Acting DC of Enforcement, CSC Ariyibi said this while answering questions from reporters on the seizure and destruction of 120 cartons frozen poultry product estimated at a Duty Paid Value, DPV, of over N1.2million, intercepted by the Command during patrol operation.
He explained that the commissioning of two sea-going vessels by the Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC Ali Hameed few days ago has given officers fresh impetus to tackle smuggling on the waterways.
According to him, the smuggled poultry items were seized along Badagry axis by officers on duty.
Ariyibi who represented the Customs Area Controller, CAC, of the Command, Comptroller BN Binga, warned the dare-devil smugglers to desist from illicit trade and allow sanity in the economic ambiance or risk arrest and prosecution for economic sabotage.
He emphasized that the Western marine operatives are well equipped now to carry out patrol surveillance at creeks and waterways.
The seized poultry items were destroyed openly before Journalists and officials from other government agencies.
