Stakeholders in the maritime industry and senior officers with Tincan Island Port Command of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, have expressed great pleasure on the promotion of Yusuf Bashar, the former Customs Area Controller, CAC, of Tincan to the rank of Acting Assistant Comptroller General, ACG.

Stakeholders expressed their thoughts in a chat with Financial Business during a visit to Tincan Command, yesterday.

While some described the promotion as an honour well-deserved, others called him intelligent officer of the Service.

Our correspondent learnt that with the latest promotion, ACG Bashar is to be in charge of Information Communication Technology – Modernisation Unit of the Service headquarters.

ACG Bashar is formally taking over from ACG Benjamin Aber, who is going on retirement.

Bashar has served Customs in various capacities and added value to the Service locally and internationally.

His tenure as the CAC of Tincan Command from 2016 to 2018 is the most outstanding in the history of Nigeria Customs.

He brought high level of intelligence and ingenuity to bear in the operations at Tincan, which paved the way for great feats such as, repatriation of stolen vehicles from Nigeria to United States of America, seizures of over 2010 pump action rifles, some of which were intercepted through profiling technique straight from the high sea and seizure of cocaine with street value of over N2 billion, among many others.

His outstanding performance brought international recognition to Nigeria Customs, as Tincan Command under his leadership received the prestigious World Customs Organisation, WCO, Award for excellence performance.

More so, his firmness in enforcing government fiscal policies on trade, increase in revenue collection, trade facilitation in line with global trend and managerial ability earned him four commendation letters from CGC Ali Hameed, who on several visits to Lagos, to inspect arms/ammunition seized by Tincan, described Bashar as a dedicated and uncompromising officer.

His skill in ICT stands him out everywhere he serves. Bashar played a major role in the formation of what Nigeria Customs has today as Pre-Arrival Assessment Report, PAAR.

Bashar understands Customs operations and the technicalities of maritime issues so much that many officers who served under him benefited tremendously from his knowledge and wealth of experience.

He has trained many officers including maritime journalists in various aspects of maritime operations.

ACG Bashar is also known as a Certified WCO Resource Person.

Above all, he is intelligent personified.
