Border security: Customs seize 8, 360 bags of rice, 781 drums of petrol

 Three weeks into the intensive border patrol by the security agencies, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), continues to receive reports on large numbers of seizures and arrests from North West, North Central, South West and South South geopolitical zones.

The Customs National Public Relations Officer, DC Joseph Attah made this known today.

According to him,  “As at September 10, 2019, 100 illegal migrants have been arrested while seizures recorded include 8, 360 bags of foreign rice; 122 bags of fertilizer; 77 vehicles; 781 drums of petrol and 16,371 empty 200 litres drums to be used for smuggling petrol”.

He added, “Other items seized include 1,491 packs of assorted drugs; three outboard 40HP engines; 13 boats; 185 drums of groundnut oil; six trucks and 114 motorcycles.

“117 suspects have also been arrested in connection with the seizures.”

DC Attah explained,  “As part of the efforts to sustain the rigorous patrol along the national borderlines, the Comptroller-General of  Customs, CGC Ali Hameed, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mohammed Babandade and the Coordinator of the exercise, Emmanuel Aliyu Ndagi have commended on the spot assessment of the implementation,  as well as compliance of the on-going border security drills”.

He pointed out, “The exercise led by Nigeria Customs Service, NCS,  Immigration in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, AFN, Police and other security agencies is intended to better secure the borders, boost national economy and strengthen  border security.

“We appeal to Nigerians, especially members of the business community to see the exercise as an opportunity to further create a conducive environment for local businesses to thrive, in the overall interest of national security and development.”
