The Seme Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has adverted what would have been a major health disaster for innocent Nigerians, as the Command destroyed the killer beef skin (ponmo) imported illegally into the country through the border between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

The Customs Area Controller, CAC, of Seme Command, Comptroller Mohammed Uba, and his officers collaborated with NAFDAC, Port Health Services and other agencies to destroy the contaminated beef skin fully loaded in a 20ft truck.

Comptroller Uba while addressing news men explained that destruction of the killer meat was based on directives from the Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC Ali Hameed, as a form of community service to the nation.

He said, “It is on this note that seizure of this nature is destroyed immediately knowing the health implications”.

According to the OC NAFDAC, Seme, Dr. Nura Audu “The ponmo had been preserved with a chemical called Formaidehyde, used in preserving corpses and was dangerous to human health, as it was unfit for human consumption”.

In the same vein, Comptroller Uba handed over 1726x914kg of cannabis sativa recently seized by his Command to NDLEA at Seme for further investigation.

He said the handing over of such drugs was in line with the synergy existing between Customs and NDLEA.

The OC, NDLEA, Mr. Udotong Essien received the items on behalf of NAFDAC.
