The Western Marine Command, WMC, of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has destroyed smuggled poultry products estimated at a Duty Paid Value, DPV, of over N6.5million.

Also, the Command has stepped up patrol surveillance on its entire area of operations, covering the creeks and waterways to curb illicit trade.

The Customs Area Controller, CAC, of the Command, Comptroller Binga B. N, made this known while speaking at the site where the seized poultry items were destroyed.

Comptroller Binga advised Nigerians to desist from smuggling and embrace legitimate trade, warning that his Command will leave no stone unturned in seizing prohibited items and arresting smugglers for prosecution in accordance with the laws.

Also, Comptroller Binga warned Nigerians strongly against smuggling of prohibited items, as well as poultry products into the country through the waterways.

He stated emphatically that his men are strategically positioned at their area of operations, even within the creeks and will not hesitate to intercept smuggled items, no matter the method of concealment.

The WMC CAC advised Nigerians not to patronise smuggled poultry products, stressing that such items pose serious health hazards to consumers, due to the method of preservation used for the products.

The items were burnt openly in the presence of officials from National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, other government agencies, as well as the media.

Speaking further on the dangers of such items going into the markets for people to buy, the CAC said destruction of the seized poultry items was in line with the policy of the Federal Government, directing that such items be destroyed, as they are not suitable for consumption.

Financial Business learnt that the burnt poultry items were seized by operatives of WMC through intelligence.
