The Seme Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, is on red alert, saying tough time awaits economic saboteurs operating within the border between Nigeria and Republic of Benin, as the Command seized over eight trailers of foreign rice smuggled into the country.
That was not all. The Command also seized parcels of Tramadol and Cannabis Sativa that were handed over to National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA for further investigation.
Addressing news men during a press conference at the Command, the Customs Area Controller, CAC, of Seme Command, Comptroller Mohammed Uba disclosed that five suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures.
Comptroller Uba further revealed that the Command raked over N1.26 billion revenue into the coffer of Federal Government in the last two months.
Also, the Command through intelligence apprehended a female suspect (Shalewa Oyetunde, 35 years), with 5.9kg of Cannabis Sativa, who has been convicted for two years.
The press briefing took another dimension when Seme CAC paraded a fake NYSC member, Abdul Umar, arrested with a vehicle using Nigerian diplomatic number to cross the border.
Uba pointed out, “The suspect claimed to be a member of NYSC. He even claimed to have the personal telephone number of the Inspector General of Police.
“When our men stopped him at the border, he said, he went to drop someone. We asked him the documents he used to pass the border. He brought out his telephone, claiming to have the number of the Police boss.
“After a search, documents where found showing that the vehicle is Renult model. When we asked his identity, he brought out his identity card, 2014 NYSC”.
“We called the Director of NYSC to confirm but the Director said that in such cases, they often collect the old ID card and issue a new one to the person for the current year. That was why we arrested him for further interrogation.”
