The Customs Area Controller, Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone ‘A’ of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Comptroller Muhammed Aliyu, has said that influx of Police uniforms into the country constitutes a threat to national security, warning that Customs would leave no stone unturned in seizing the items and arresting individuals found culpable of illegal smuggling of such items.
Comptroller Aliyu gave this warning while briefing Journalists on the seizures of bales of illegal Police uniforms, tear gas canisters, as well as paraphernalia of the Nigeria Police, by his Unit through intelligence
He further disclosed that the items were concealed in a Toyota Sienna space bus by the smugglers in attempt to escape security checks, even as the vehicle was moving out of Lagos, but was intercepted by his officers using intelligence driven approach to uncover the items.
That was not all. The CAC also revealed that a suspect was apprehended in connection with the seized uniforms.
He frowned, “These items constitute a threat to national security because the uniforms could get into wrong hands and be used for kidnapping and other crimes, especially during the elections. As you could see here, the ranks, belts, berets and police badges with identity cards were part of what our Unit intercepted”.
On the Police paraphernalia, Comptroller Aliyu pointed out, “What we have here are the ranks of Inspector, Sergeant, along with the belts and badges on the ranks, but the identity cards have no names on them. This shows that they were already printed in such a way that they could put any name they want.”
His assertion, “The vehicle conveying the items was intercepted along the highway. Therefore, what we know is that the vehicle was caught on Lagos road en-route another State”.
Looking closely at the items, he stressed, “The quantity alone is not the concern but the havoc these items could cause in the country. For example, a bundle of this uniform could accommodate about ten persons and Nigerians would complain about atrocities of Police, not knowing that they are not real Police, but impostors in Police uniforms”.
Responding to question on the possibility of some of the items evading the eagle eye of the officers,
He explained, “The Service knows how to get such items, if there are. There are certain things we do not disclose to the public but we map out our strategies very well to arrest the culprits.
