Customs patrol vehicle sets ablaze by smugglers at Idiroko:

Customs officers with Ogun Area Command have suffered another fierce attack from the dare-devil smugglers operating within Idiroko axis, the border between Nigeria and Republic of Benin while on official duty.

Financial Business learnt that this violence attack, which is one of the numerous attacks on officers by smugglers at Idiroko, took place while on information patrol.

Speaking, the Public Relations Officer, PRO of Ogun Customs Command, ASC Maiwada A. A explained, “On Tuesday October16, 2018, at about 1700hours, Ogun Command Anti-smuggling Patrol Team went on an information patrol around Mango/Ogo-Osun river, along Idiroko road.

“The Team succeeded in intercepting 28bags of smuggled foreign rice and two motorcycles used in conveying the smuggled items”.

He stressed, “On their way to deposit the seized items at the station, some hoodlums suspected to be smugglers and their accomplices blocked the road to the station, armed with dangerous weapons, machetes, cutlasses and Dane guns,  attempted to disarm our officers, setting official vehicle ablaze and forcefully carting away the seized items.”

The PRO went on, “Therefore, in line with our rules of engagement, after all reasonable efforts were made to control situation short of using force, considering the fact that the lives of officers were in danger, they were left with no option than to use minimum force on the miscreants, so as to secure the lives of our officers, disperse the hoodlums and to secure the seizures”.

He continued, “Similarly, the goods were successfully brought to the station with two suspects arrested in connection with the incident.”

He appealed, “We are using this opportunity to appeal to the citizens to partner with law enforcement officers, in order to protect the nation’s economy, rather than aiding and shielding economic saboteurs, as well as unpatriotic Nigerians”.
