Nigeria needs biometric data system for national security- Sheriff Deputies CEO

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of Sheriff Deputies Limited, Dr. Island Anyasi, has said that Nigeria as a country needs biometric data documentation like what obtains in advanced countries to promote national security at all times.

Dr. Island Anyasi, who is also a security expert, made this known in interactive session with newsmen, when receiving award on outstanding performance as, ‘The Most Innovative Security Company in Nigeria’, on behalf of Sheriff Deputies.

The Sheriff CEO explained that biometric data is very important in security measures, as it helps in nipping crimes on the bud. His assertion, “Biometric system essentially involves capturing names, pictures, fingerprint, footprint and other vital data of individuals committing crimes in the country, in order to track them.  For instance, in the next five years to come Sheriff Deputies is looking at the use of biometric security system in its services”.

Responding to question on the Company’s plans in the next five years to come, he said, “Aside from the use of biometric system, we also want to use monitoring security devices in our operations.  We intend to improve on our level of technology by partnering with mega foreign companies on getting sophisticated technological equipment.”

He added, “Our plans for the future also include diversifying into different areas of security operations and offering consultancy services.”

His words, “In Sheriff Deputies, our performance stands us out everywhere.  We won the best kitted security Company four times. Our Guards are educated and well trained, which enable them performance excellently wherever they are posted to. We pay them well and provide medical care whenever situation arises.”

In his remarks, the Head of Business Development, Sheriff Deputies, Mr. Basil Okereafor, explained that the Company often gives useful information to the Police, to be alert on security issues in the environment, even as they work hand-in-hand with the Police in providing security services.

Speaking further, Mr. Okereafor commended the current Commissioner of Police in Lagos State for outstanding performance in securing Lagos, while calling on the Federal Government to ensure appropriate funding of the Police for dignity to return to their profession.

Also speaking, the General Manager, Administration, Sheriff Deputies, Mr. Okem Ukwamedua, revealed that the Company is doing a lot in term of Corporate Social Responsibility, in giving back to the society.

He enthused, “For instance, the Company gives scholarship to indigent ones in the society, even as it donates regularly to Motherless Babies and orphanages”.

On challenges facing the Company, he said, “Lack of unified data system for security issues, illiteracy level of the people on security matters and some non-paying Clients”.

On the way forward, he advised, “The regulatory bodies should have a standard for security companies operating in the country.  People should be security conscious and understand that security is everyone’s duty.  The government should build a Police force that is friendly to the public.”
