Kofi Annan, a force for good- Says U.N. Secretary-General

“Kofi Annan was a guiding force for good.  It was with profound sadness that I learned of his passing. In many ways, Kofi Annan worked with United Nations. He rose through the ranks to lead the organisation into the new millennium. He did that with matchless dignity and determination.”

These were the words of the current U.N. Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, while expressing his sadness about the sudden passing away of Kofi Annan, at 80.

 Late Kofi Annan, known globally as one of the most celebrated diplomats was the first black African to become the secretary-general of U.N. He served the U.N. two terms in that capacity as the secretary-general from January 1, 1997- Dec. 31, 2006.

The statement issued by his foundation in Switzerland on his death, stated, “Wherever there was urgent need, he reached out and touched many people with deep compassion, even as he empathised with them”.

At his death, many world leaders are describing him as a visionary leader, who has left behind an enduring legacy, worthy of emulation by all and sundry in the society.
