Oyo Customs says Sarki is not a border town

By Tayo Daniels (In Ibadan)

Comptroller Odibu:

The Customs Area Controller, CAC, of Oyo/Osun Command, Comptroller Christopher Odibu, has said that most prohibited items seized by his Command recently are from Sarki axis, which is the link road giving access to Republic of Benin.

Comptroller Odibu disclosed this in a chat with Financial Business in Ibadan, stressed that his Command is curtailing smuggling of rice and other contraband items in the area effectively.

He explained that sarki is not a border town where immigration officials, Customs and other security agencies are seen on the road like any other border community; therefore, Oyo/Osun Command is putting measures in place to ensure Customs presence at that area.

According to him, “Smuggled rice and many prohibited items intercepted by our Command are from Sarki area, but I want people to understand is that Sarki is not a border town. Infact, if you are going to the border town at that area, you need another six hours drive to get to where the border town is located.”

Comptroller Odibu disclosed that he met the Oba of the area and had discussion with him on the need for Customs to get a land where a good structure should be built, in order to ensure effective monitoring of the area.

Odibu also said that if well restructured, that area can be opened up for legitimate trade, which will generate more revenue for the Federal Government in the future.
