The trend of massive seizures of exotic cars, prohibited items, arrest and prosecution of culprits by the Federal Operations Unit ,FOU, Zone ‘A’ of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, is a clear signal that the Unit is battled-ready for smugglers.

This was further demonstrated, as FOU Zone ‘A’ destroyed over 917 cartons of frozen poultry products, with a Duty paid Value, DPV, of N5.5million, smuggled into the country illegally, against government policies on agriculture.

The seizure and destruction of the poultry products during the week came only few days after the same Unit recorded mind boggling seizures of prohibited items worth over N1billion, within three weeks (From April 10, to May 15, 2018).  Within the same period, the Unit made underpayments recovery of N28.8million, arrested 14 suspects in connection with 125 seizures and impounded 30 exotic vehicles.

Records obtained by Financial Business shows that the same Unit from January to April 2018, has intercepted over 7,517 cartons of poultry products, with Duty Paid Value, DPV, of over N40.5million and destroyed the items accordingly.

The Customs Area Controller, CAC, of the Unit, Comptroller Mohammed Uba, who has drawn the battle line between his Unit and smugglers said,  “We will continue to make the Zone uncomfortable for economic saboteurs. Poultry products are prohibited by government. As such, smuggling the items has serious economic implications, as it effects local production of similar items and the agricultural sector of the economy. ”
