The Federal Operations Unit ,FOU, Zone ‘A’ of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has seized and destroyed 917 cartons of frozen poultry products, with a Duty paid Value, DPV, of over N5.5million, smuggled into the country illegally.
Financial Business inquest revealed that from January to April 2018, FOU Zone ‘A’ has intercepted about 7,517 cartons of poultry products, with DPV of over N40.5million and destroyed the items in accordance with the law.
Therefore, this latest destruction of N5.5million poultry products by FOU Zone ‘A’, makes a total of over N46millon of such items intercepted by the same Unit in only four months.
Speaking, the Customs Area Controller, CAC, of the Unit, Comptroller Mohammed Uba, condemned in strong terms the current trend in smuggling poultry products, against the policy of the Federal Government to develop the agricultural sector for greater economic growth and development.
Comptroller Uba said, “Poultry products are prohibited by government. As such, smuggling the items has serious economic implications, as it effects local production of similar items and the agricultural sector of the economy at large. I am calling on all Nigerians to support government policies aimed at growing agriculture”.
