In line with the policy of the Federal Government to promote export sub-sector of the economy, the Tincan Island Port Command of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, is taking the lead in facilitating export trade of agricultural and manufactured  products to enhance greater economic productivity.

 The Customs Area Controller ,CAC, of Tincan Command, Comptroller Mohammed Abdullahi Baba Musa, revealed that the Command has recorded tremendous increase in export trade from January to March this year.

He stated,  “The Command agricultural products for export, in line with the policy of the Federal Government from January to March 2018 stood at N38.517 metric tons, with Free On Board ,FOB, value of N22.435billion, while processed and manufactured goods export stood at N6.945 metric tons, with FOB value of N6.711 billion”.

The CAC further explained,  “For the period under review, the total export stood at N45.462 metric tons, with FOB value of N29.146 billion, as against the total export of N8.140 metric tons, with FOB value of N7.246 billion recorded in  the same period  (January to march), 2017. This shows appreciable improvement of 558.46% in terms of volume and 402.24% in terms of FOB value”.

He pointed out, “The items exported under agricultural products for this period include Cashew nut, rubber, Hibiscus flower, cocoa butter, sesame seed, processed wood, frozen shrimps and processed leather. Similarly, the items exported under manufacturing products include empty bottles, biscuit, polyethylene, billets, soap, hair cream and tissue paper.”

On trade facilitation, the CAC stressed, “Effort is being intensified under government Presidential initiative on ease of doing business, in order to improve our performance rating. We have made some gains in 48hours cargo clearance time, some categories of goods are being cleared from Customs Zone within six hours”.

Giving more details on Tincan’s trade facilitation strategies, Comptroller Musa, enthused, “Our trade facilitation structures have been strengthened to sustain the following gains, fast track facilities provided to encourage traders and importers as well;  Dispute Resolution Committee working as scheduled; Help Desk created for enquires and operational support;  effective use of Time Release Studies, TRS, in the trade facilitation chain; and securing government’s revenue in area of dispute through the use of Bank Guarantee/indemnity, as provided in the import guideline”.

On the whole, Comptroller Musa said Tincan Command will continue to work tirelessly in revenue generation for government and trade facilitation in line with global best practice.
