The Adamawa/Taraba Command of Nigeria Customs Service ,NCS, has handed over seized perishable goods worth millions of naira to Internally Displaced Persons ,IDPs, in the North East.
Despite insurgency in Taraba, the Customs Area Controller ,CAC, of the Command, Comptroller Francis Adetoye, has vowed to stamp out smuggling in the State, even as he added nine more seizures to his Command‘s seizure profile in January, 2018.
According to the Statistics made available to Financial Business, the Command seized a total of 109 bags of 50kg foreign rice estimated at a Duty Paid Value ,DPV, of N1, 412, 005.60 during the period under review. Others seizures include one tricycle (popularly known as Keke -Napep) with chassis no: 251574 and DPV of N 319, 989.00, one machine with chassis No. LW8HDMZO6BW001781 and one Mercedes Benz tipper, with chassis No: 43 5980 with DPV of N409, 584.00 and N1,050,840.00 .
Also, the Command collected a total revenue of N20, 508,591.27 in January, 2018.
The CAC said in the statement, “It will interest you to know that the Command was given N16.4 million as revenue target for the month under review, but has exceeded the target with about N4million. The Command also handed over the following items to Internally Displaced Persons ,IDP, in the North- East 1, 698 bags of 50kg Rice, 121 bags of 25kg maize and 642 cartons of Savon Soap. The items were handed over in compliance with the Presidential directive to the Comptroller General of Customs ,CGC, Hameed Ali”.
Comptroller Adetoye therefore called on the public to be law abiding and say no to smuggling.
According to him, “Smuggling destroys the nation, it creates unemployment and cripples the economy. So, be patriotic in your business dealings”.
