The Customs Area Controller, CAC, of Federal Operations Unit ,FOU, Zone ‘A’ of Nigeria Customs Service ,NCS, Comptroller Mohammed Uba is talking very touch after the huge seizure of N1.7bn Pangolin scales from a private home in Lagos few days ago.
Comptroller Uba said FOU will leave no stone unturned in carrying out its statutory duty of enforcing government trade polices, in order to promote economic growth and development.
He stressed that FOU operatives have been well trained and adequately equipped by the Comptroller General of Customs ,CGC, Ali Hameed to carry out their duties effectively.
He emphasized, “The Service is now intelligence-driven and CGC Ali Hameed has empowered us with needed work-tools and necessary logistics to carry out our operations within Zone A. Therefore, we will continue to perform our duties effectively, and must ensure that economic saboteurs are brought to book.”
Financial Business gathered that FOU has increased its patrol surveillance within the entire zone A, to outsmart the dare-devil smugglers within the zone.
It would be recalled that FOU through intelligence signal made a huge seizure of Wild-life parts (Pangolin), estimated at the Duty Paid Value, DPV, of N1.7billion from a warehouse at 64 Opebi Road, off Toyin Street, Ikeja Lagos, even as a Chinese national, identified as Mr. Li Chaomin was arrested in connection with the prohibited items.
Most remarkably is the fact that operatives of FOU made this seizure just few days after the same Unit evacuated 55 sacks of Pangolin Shells weighing 2001kg, valued at N408.3million and 218 pieces of Elephant Tusks, weighing 343kg, valued at N85.1million, which were handed over to Nigeria Environment Standards and Regulatory Enforcement Agency, NESREA, for further investigation..
Commending the efforts of his officers, Comptroller Uba said, “I am using this opportunity to appreciate the determination and resilience of our officers who put their lives on the line in performing their statutory responsibilities, most especially in anti-smuggling operations, which is yielding positive result. We will continue to motivate them and provide needed operational logistics to enhance greater productivity”.
