Ship registration review : Committee to ensure automation of processes

The  Committee on Review of Ship Registration inaugurated by the Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency , NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside has been given the responsibility of ensuring automation of processes involving ship registration in Nigeria’s maritime  industry.

Briefing news men at the sidelines of the unveiling of Maritime Industry Forecast  2018-2019, at Eko Hotel, Lagos,  Peterside said there was urgent need to have a Committee that will look holistically at ship registration processes as well as operations, in order to advise the management accordingly.

He explained that the committee has a mandate to review the activities and operations of Nigerian Ship Registration Office, so as to ensure automation of registration processes in line with global  best practice.

He said, «Also, the Committee has a duty to examine the status of  ship registry in line with international best practice. In advanced countries ship registration is well automation and not done manually. As such, we should follow this trend to enhance efficiency in the system. Therefore, the Committee should also ascertain that ship registration processes are of the same operational expectations with other global ship registries ».

He stressed, «The Committee will further determine the level of automation of Nigerian Ship Registration Office, advise and recommend improvements that can be carried out in the ship registration office. This implies  assessing and determining other jurisdictions with more advanced registries with which NIMASA can establish reciprocal relationship».

At the end, Engineer Emmanuel Ilori,  was appointed the Chairman of the Committee.
