A Customs officer with the Federal Operations Unit ,FOU, zone ‘A’ Lagos, simply identified as Musa M. M. escaped death by  whisker when the dare-devil smugglers attacked his patrol team while on duty, along Idiroko axis, the road linking Nigeria with Republic of Benin.

Financial Business gathered that the officer, whose hand was seriously butchered by unrepentant smugglers, was on information patrol with his colleagues when smugglers laid ambush along a community known as lbeyi River area of ldogo and attacked them.

Customs patrol vehicle burnt in a recent attack by smugglers along Idiroko road:

In the process, the smugglers butchered Musa’s hand mercilessly while the other officers managed to escape the scene, but brought in the seized vehicle, a Toyota Highlander, to the Command’s premises at Sentry, Idiroko.

Ogun CAC addressing the press at Idiroko, beside their patrol vehicle destroyed by smugglers while on duty:

The injured officer was first taken to ldiroko General Hospital for treatment but later transferred to Lagos Orthopedic hospital to ensure he gets a better treatment.

When our correspondent visited Idiroko area to carry out on the spot assessment report of the sad incident, the atmosphere was still charged with officers talking touch, saying that no level of attack and intimidation by economic saboteurs will deter them from carrying out their statutory duty.

In a chat with the Public Relations Officer ,PRO, of Ogun Customs Command, he explained that the injured officer was on duty with a Joint Patrol Team of Ogun Command Crack Squad and FOU zone A, led by CSC Abdullahi M, comprising of SVC No: 41462 CSC Ogbonna A. E., SVC No: 36260 SC Musa T. SVC No: 52723 ASC/Habu A. S., SVC No: 44843 ASC 11 Musa M. M. SVC No: 52288 CA1 Ahmed S, and others, when  the dare-devil smugglers laid ambush at  along lbeyi River area of ldogo and attacked them.

This heartless attack as well as life threatening injuries inflicted on Musa is just one out of numerous attacks officers suffered recently along Idiroko axis.

A Customs officer attacked by smugglers at Idiroko axis:

About two months ago, smugglers carrying out illicit trade within Idiroko community, which is known to be a very volatile border in the country, attacked Customs officers from the same Command while on patrol and shattered their operational vehicles with bullets.

Also, in the last quarter of 2017, smugglers attacked Ogun officers along the same axis while trying to secure seizures and burnt over three of their vehicles.

In the same vein, Financial Business inquest learnt that in 2016 alone, over 70 gallant officers of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, lost their lives while on duty protecting Nigeria’s borders from smugglers, and in 2017, over 70 officers died in the same manner.
